The joint adverse effects of aged nanoscale plastic debris and their co-occurring benzo[α]pyrene in freshwater mussel (Anodonta anatina)
2021
Although the presence of small-scale plastics, including nanoscale plastic debris (NPD, size1 μm), is expected in the environment, our understanding of their potential uptake and biodistribution in organisms is still limited. This mostly is because of the limitations in analytical techniques to characterize NPD in organisms' bodies. Moreover, it is still debatable whether aged NPD can sorb and transfer chemicals into organisms. Here, we apply iron oxide-doped polystyrene nanoparticles (Fe-PS NPs) of 270 nm size to quantify the uptake and biodistribution of NPD in freshwater mussels (Anodonta anatina). The Fe-PS NPs were, first, oxidized using heat-activated potassium persulfate treatments t…
Connection between temperature, larval production, virulence and geographical distribution of Rhipidocotyle parasites infecting the duck mussel, Anod…
2015
In this thesis, two bucephalid trematode parasites Rhipidocotyle campanula and R. fennica, which use the same first (Anodonta anatina) and second intermediate (Rutilus rutilus) host were studied. The aim was to investigate the effect of temperature on one of the key processes in the transmission of these parasites: 1) the emergence of cercarial larvae from A. anatina over short (1 h) and 2) long (throughout the annual cercarial shedding period, from May to October) time periods as well, as on 3) mussel survival and 4) the seasonal timing of cercarial release. In addition, the aim was to study how the cercarial shedding traits are linked to the 5) geographical occurrence and abundance of the…
Morphological variation of the unionidae mussel Anodonta anatina
2013
ABSTRACT Morphology of a given species can vary among individuals, morphology differences can be found between populations males can be different from females (sexual dimorphism) or e.g. with young and old individuals. The aim of the present study was to investigate morphological variability in the unionidae mussel Anodonta anatina originating from two populations. Measured variables included length, height, width, volume and dry mass of shell, dry mass of soft tissues and gill blades, and age, sex, estimation of glochidium larvae produced. The main results included faster growth of mussels in Lake Koijärvi than in Lake Päijänne (at the age of 4-5 years), which may reflect the higher produc…
Shell morphology of the unionid mussels (Anodonta anatina, Unio pictorum and U. tumidus) in relation to gender and trematode parasitism
2015
Freshwater mussels (Unionoida) show great variability in shell morphology which can be associated with differences in habitat, sex and/or parasite infection. Three unionid mussel species, (Anodonta anatina, Unio pictorum and Unio tumidus) were collected from two sites Lake Saravesi, (Laukaa) and Lake Kuivasjarvi, (Oulu), between May - October 2012. Intraspecific trends that were associated with the mussels’ sex and/or parasites infection were studied and observations were made on how sex and parasite infection could have a role in shells morphological characters/patterns. The study revealed a range of morphometric differences among and across populations, as well as, within and between spec…
